Expansion Through Partnership and Professional Development

October 2, 2016 by Scott Layman

More than 100 secondary history and social studies teachers attended professional development workshops throughout August made possible by a generous grant from the Virginia Law Foundation (VLF) and presented in partnership with the Center for Teaching the Rule of Law. The VLF’s mission is to promote through philanthropy the rule of law, access to justice, and law-related education. The workshops focused on the history, theory and application of the rule of law, the new Justice in the Classroom website and companion binder (justiceintheclassroom.net), and the role of the judiciary. Workshops were held in Goochland, Petersburg, Portsmouth and Hampton. Board Members and co-chairs of the Education Committee, Cheryl Ragsdale and Debra Prillaman, led the curriculum planning group comprised of Board Members Lucretia Carrico, Tom Kennedy, Education Director Barbara Schneider and Education Consultant Greg Ownby, which worked to revise the Justice in the Classroom Program into five separate segments with lesson plans and activities. The Justice in the Classroom curriculum revision is made possible through a generous grant from the Richard & Caroline T. Gwathmey Memorial Trust, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee.
