The latest news from the John Marshall Foundation

Message from the President

October 3, 2016 by Scott Layman

Dear Marshall Friends and Family,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, it is a pleasure to bring you an update on events at the John Marshall Foundation.

It has been 10 years since the Board has undertaken a consultant-led strategic planning process. We have accomplished much in these 10 years, such as establishing the award-winning Justice in the Classroom program, partnering with a number of organizations with a similar mission, developing an active Junior Board and a Descendants’ Committee, and expanding our educational outreach and donor base. Many of us on the Board believe, however, that the Foundation needs to be national in scope. We need to set a significantly broader vision for how we enhance the legacy of John Marshall, and this vision needs to encompass a much larger field than just Richmond or Virginia. John Marshall’s contributions were and are for the whole nation, not merely Virginia.

Last month, we started this major next step as the Board retained Bryan & Jordan Consulting, Inc. to lead the Foundation in creating a new strategic plan for the coming 3-5 years and beyond. Charlie Bryan is President and CEO emeritus of the Virginia Historical Society, and Dan Jordan is the President and CEO emeritus of Monticello. Since forming their consulting firm in 2009, B&J have developed a national clientele of major history-focused organizations and others. David McCullough, Pulitzer-prize-winning historian, has said of B&J: “What a terrific teaming of two leading experts in the management of historical institutions and other nonprofit organizations. They are each topnotch scholars to boot. I cannot think of a stronger consulting firm in the country.”

This process will take the attention and added effort on the part of the JMF Board, but that is nothing new for this hard working team. I am excited about the possibilities and opportunities before us as we seek to further the legacy of the Great Chief Justice, the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary. We are in good hands with Bryan & Jordan. We look forward to bringing you a report in early January 2017 and to the road map it will provide us.

If you would like to share your thoughts with me about the direction of the Foundation, please email me at: csp@activated.com. This strategic planning process is made possible through a generous grant from The Beirne Carter Foundation. We are grateful for their outstanding support.

I want to express my sincere appreciation for the privilege of serving as your President, and for the enthusiastic commitment of our Board of Trustees, committees and staff. Also, I want to thank each of you for your continued support of the work of the John Marshall Foundation and the opportunities before us.

With deep regard,

Caroline Smith Parkinson, President
